<image:caption>Alex Braidwood’s practice investigates how people relate to the sounds that surround them. His projects do this by refocusing people's attention on listening in a visually dominant culture, promoting the value of preserving natural soundscapes, exploring audio issues related to sustainability, and engaging a variety of audiences with these increasingly important issues. Braidwood’s work operates at the intersection of art and science while also integrating technology through the spirit of do-it-yourself (DIY) and Maker (low voltage electrical engineering) culture. He builds on his history as a formally trained graphic designer, professional interaction designer, independent business owner, self-taught programmer, and perpetual educator. He develops each project to engage audiences through contextually relevant experiences.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The present moment is an opportunity to grasp our heartbeat, hear beauty and remind us that we are alive. I am curious and question everyday patterns and gestures, and have learned to pause…self-reflect, be grateful for all that has transpired to become reality — Joy, Happiness, Contentment and Peace. As an Indian American and seen as a model minority, I am aware of my many privileges, but as a person of color, I recognize the biases and marginalization by how my adopted country has labeled and categorized me. The struggles with how everyday gazes positions me as the other, constant code switching validating my intersectional identity and experiences has made me a survivor. I seek solidarity with communities to be the change. Designer as a catalyst — I perceive design as a philosophy of life where designers must empathize with and respect the diverse multicultural communities of the people we serve. My designs are shaped by lived experiences, and social engagements in community spaces to build understanding, acceptance, and respect. My medium for creative expression varies greatly but includes the following: curating immersive participatory experiences, for example, food that I prepare to share with others; interactive installations using mixed and various emerging digital media which evoke multi-sensory responses. In all of these, I wish to highlight invisible norms connecting audiences with themselves, the community, and me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nearly everything I do—as a designer, artist, historian, writer, and teacher—is more or less related to a concern that has been a preoccupation of mine since the 1960s. Throughout those many years, I have been trying to find out what (if any) aspects of design, art and architecture are objective, universal and enduring. This has led me to emphasize vision, to engage in “visual” art (both art and design), and to research the science of seeing. In turn, this quest has also prompted me to investigate and to publish widely about the phenomenon of camouflage, both natural and man-made. It is inevitable that both graphic designers and camouflage artists are practioners of camouflage, which is the manipulation of vision. At all times, they inevitably conceal, reveal, direct, and misdirect.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a Chinese woman artist living in the Western world, I am aware of art, literature, philosophy, and mythology from both cultures. Developing a personal visual language that expresses universal ideas, I create artworks for the stories and aesthetics of each image, and for making visible those concepts which reflect my personal experiences. I want my viewers to look at my projects through magical windows into a deep secondary space. Inspired by nature and multiple cultures, my artwork explores our common humanity, diverse society, and my inner voyage. Creating artwork required me to realize my nature, re-study cultures, and adapt new thinking, which resulted in a new perspective on life. It has also challenged me to constantly solve visual problems, learn new techniques, and explore the splendid human heritage. My works form a visual communication that interacts in several collective dialogues between eternity and transience, oneness and variety, microcosm and macrocosm, existence and emptiness. Beyond various techniques and conceptions, the process of creating art and design works has enchanted me. At the core of my art-making is an attempt to attain moments of transcendence, contribute to humanity, and reach the artless-art, emptiness, and egolessness. My artistic creation is a process of deciphering my life journey.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a multidisciplinary artist and designer, my practice encompasses an eclectic span of investigations, including conceptual products, sculptures, installations, garments, and graphics, ranging from poetic to pragmatic. I consider myself to be a designer of experiences, interactions, and dialogues. While my work is often rooted in typography or product design, its subject matter is constantly shifting. At times I will convey an emotion or attempt to address a personal inquiry. Other times, my work will respond to an event or critique a cultural shift. In other, more applied instances, I will work from a specific brief, using methods of human-centered design to deliver tailored design solutions. With an inquiry-driven practice, I am passionate about—and continually excited by— the possibilities of visual communication and human-centered design.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’m a fine artist, turned graphic designer, turned illustrator. Except: I’ve always been an illustrator, I can’t stop being an artist, and design helps me understand what’s important about them both. Every shift in my journey has allowed me to integrate and see more clearly what came before. When I became a designer, I learned to care about and solve other peoples’ problems. By stepping away from “my” projects and preferences, I gained creative freedom and perspective in my own work. I saw ways I limited myself. As an illustrator, I constantly tap into the skills and voice of the artist. Years of being a sculptor gave me a love and understanding of volume. Years of tedious still-life drawing taught me to see. Years of life and love and heartbreak taught me to connect seeing and feeling, taught me the power of images that show not only what we see, but how we feel. As a new—but not young—illustrator, I’m deeply grateful to be at this amazing intersection of art and design.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My research explores unconventional materials and digital methods to graphic design to create tangible type, graphics, and even designed objects. Designers have worked with the merits and demerits brought with the new technological era while the technological innovations yield influences. The exciting and rapidly changing digital manufacturing methods have influenced many art and design fields, including, but not limited to, graphic design, product design, sculpture, printmaking, and architecture. These new technologies have introduced new tools and methods for pushing the boundaries, both in terms of concept and materiality. The cutting-edge digital techniques play a crucial role in turning intangible ideas into tangible design products with physical substance, also become an agent to build a strong connection between analog and digital environments. 3D printing could also allow us to talk about the notion of printed letters which is still written, but substantial. It became an agent not only to bridge digital and physical experiences but also to enhance visual and tangible interactions. The materialized text accomplishes artistic expression, construction technique, and materiality. Thus, these letters acquire distinct characteristics such as texture, structure, volume, dimension, and even interactivity with their physical tangibility. The physicality makes the designed product playable for everyone. The tangible letterforms still provide visual experience but also provide tactile experiences. The combination of digital methods and digital fabrication enables a new approach to inclusive design. My research can be inspirational for both professional practices and educational settings and encourage creative professionals to launch their own cross-disciplinary research projects with design principles and emerging technologies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a designer and educator, I have been thinking about how design could take a larger role in supporting social justice. Visual Communication design is not just a form of aesthetic power, but also a form of cultural power. Most of my students are freshmen and they are quite new in the digital design world. We ask the question: With today’s technology, how can we create an effective design in a more digital space? I designed this project for my students to creatively use typographic poster design and animation to speak out for what they believe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How does human machine interaction impact perception ? This has been the key area of exploration in my interdisciplinary practice over the last decade. My current series of abstract drawings and paintings focus on the visual language of digital artifacts and the aesthetics of glitch, error and noise. Compositionally these works are inspired by geometric abstraction and color field paintings, with a process transitioning from digital to traditional mediums of drawing & painting and driven by the notion of repetitive mark making as an act of meditation. The algorithmic aesthetics of these works pushes into focus both the functional (generative) and dysfunctional (glitch) nature of code as a tool for expression. As efficient flow of information has become essential for the exchange of ideas, social interactions and political discourse in our networked society, my signal series of drawings explore concepts of structure and hierarchy as informed by the diagrammatic representation of command and control modules often seen in electronic systems, social networks, botnets, neural circuits, genome maps etc. These works are also influenced by my interest in non-traditional graphic musical scores & representation of sound visually.</image:caption>
